The History of the Morgan Silver Dollar: America's Most Iconic Silver Coin
For more than 140 years, the Morgan Silver Dollar has stood as one of the most recognizable and beloved coins in American history. First minted in 1878, the Morgan Dollar represents far more than its face value—it symbolizes America's westward expansion, the nation's booming silver industry, and an era of incredible economic growth.
Today, the Morgan Dollar remains one of the most collected and traded U.S. coins in the world. Whether you're a seasoned numismatist, a precious metals investor, or simply appreciate American history, the Morgan Dollar continues to capture the imagination of collectors across generations.
The Birth of the Morgan Dollar
The story of the Morgan Dollar begins shortly after the Coinage Act of 1873, legislation that ended the free coinage of silver and became known by critics as the "Crime of '73." As silver production from western mines exploded—particularly from Nevada's famous Comstock Lode—mine owners and politicians pushed Congress to restore silver coinage.
In 1878, Congress passed the Bland-Allison Act, requiring the U.S. Treasury to purchase millions of dollars worth of domestic silver each month and strike it into silver dollars.
That same year, the Morgan Silver Dollar was born.
George T. Morgan: The Artist Behind the Coin
The coin is named after its designer, George T. Morgan, an English engraver recruited by the United States Mint in 1876.
Morgan believed Lady Liberty should look like a real American woman instead of the idealized classical figures commonly used on earlier coins.
His inspiration came from Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia schoolteacher whose profile became the face of Liberty on the new silver dollar.
The reverse features a powerful American bald eagle holding arrows and an olive branch, representing both the nation's strength and its desire for peace.
The design quickly became one of the most admired in American coinage and remains an enduring favorite among collectors today.

Where Were Morgan Dollars Minted?
Morgan Dollars were produced at five United States Mint facilities:
- Philadelphia (no mint mark)
- Carson City (CC)
- New Orleans (O)
- San Francisco (S)
- Denver (D) – 1921 only
Among these, the Carson City Mint is perhaps the most legendary. Located near Nevada's Comstock Lode silver mines, Carson City Morgan Dollars are highly sought after due to their lower mintages and rich Old West history.
The End of an Era
Morgan Dollars were produced continuously from 1878 through 1904.
Production ended when the government's silver reserves were exhausted. Although many believed the Morgan Dollar's story had ended, the coin made one final appearance in 1921, following the passage of the Pittman Act, which authorized millions of new silver dollars after earlier coins had been melted during and after World War I.
Later that same year, the Morgan Dollar was replaced by the Peace Dollar, which commemorated the end of World War I.
For nearly a century, Morgan Dollars remained a historical treasure until the U.S. Mint revived the design in 2021 to celebrate its enduring legacy.
Why Collectors Love Morgan Dollars
Few American coins combine history, artistry, precious metal content, and collectibility quite like the Morgan Dollar.
Collectors appreciate them because they:
- Contain nearly three-quarters of an ounce of silver
- Feature one of the most beautiful designs in U.S. history
- Represent America's western mining boom
- Offer hundreds of collectible dates and mint marks
- Are available for beginners and advanced collectors alike
- Have remained popular for nearly 150 years
Whether purchased for their silver value or historical significance, Morgan Dollars continue to be one of the cornerstones of American coin collecting.
Morgan Dollars as an Investment
Many investors include Morgan Dollars in their precious metals portfolios because they offer a unique combination of intrinsic silver value and numismatic appeal.
Unlike generic silver rounds, Morgan Dollars often carry collector premiums based on their date, mint mark, condition, and rarity.
Common-date circulated Morgan Dollars remain an affordable entry point for many collectors, while scarcer examples and certified coins can command significantly higher premiums.
As with any collectible or precious metal, values fluctuate with both silver prices and collector demand.
